Natural Deodorant Detox: Best Tips

Hands holding Wildcraft's Lime and Bergamot Deodorant

If you’ve ever thought about making the switch from aluminum antiperspirant to natural deodorant, you’ve probably heard of the “detox period.”

This totally normal transition phase is when your underarms work hard to purge the toxins and aluminum that have built up over time. It can take a few weeks for your body to adjust, and some people can experience more odour or sweat than what they’re typically used to. The good news is it’s temporary, and with a bit of patience and knowledge, you’ll have your natural deodorant working for you in no time.

Here are a few of our favourite tips for sticking through the detox period and making the most out of your natural deodorant journey:

Gently cleanse and exfoliate regularly

Use a clay mask once a week to deep clean your underarms, help draw out impurities from the skin, and decrease the likelihood of developing odour during the detox period. You can also use a washcloth with soap to gently exfoliate the area and create a fresh canvas for deodorant application.

Don't apply right after shaving

Applying deodorant—natural or not—to freshly shaved underarms can lead to irritation. If you shave your armpits, give them some time to breathe (at least a few minutes!) before applying deodorant. Have breakfast, do some yoga, make yourself a tea—just give your underarms a quick break first.

Don't be afraid to reapply

Sometimes you just need a little extra odour protection. On gym days or afternoons when it’s especially hot outside, throw your deodorant in your bag and refresh throughout the day as needed. Our 100% natural deodorants come in convenient travel-friendly jars so you can take them on the go.

Know which ingredients work for you

If you experience any irritation during the first few weeks of switching to natural deodorant, troubleshoot by taking a look at the ingredients. One of the most common irritating ingredients in natural deodorants tends to be baking soda, and sensitivities and reactions can develop over time. If this happens, take a break from your current deodorant, use a replacement product with different ingredients (our deodorants are baking soda-free), and see if the reaction stops.

Stay hydrated

Drinking lots of water enables your body to remove odour-causing toxins more efficiently. The more water you drink, the more toxins and waste your body flushes out. And if you're sweating, staying hydrated is vital to ensuring your body keeps cool too.

Stacking small, good habits throughout your detox period (and beyond) can help maximize the effectiveness of your chosen natural deodorant. If you have any other natural deodorant tips that you swear by, let us know in the comments. We’d love to hear them!
